South Africa Proposes Legislation to Regulate Internet Gambling

South Africa Proposes Legislation to Regulate Internet Gambling

In South Africa, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has recently introduced a bill (B11-2024) aimed at regulating online gambling. This move seeks to update the outdated provisions of the National Gambling Act, specifically addressing the modern needs of digital gambling.

Benefits of Regulating Online Gambling

The DA believes that establishing a regulated online gambling sector could bring several positive outcomes. It would provide a safer gambling environment by setting strict operational standards. Regulating the sector is also seen as a way to generate additional tax revenue and reduce the prevalence of illegal gambling operations that currently operate beyond governmental oversight.

Key Features of the Proposed Bill

The bill, advocated by DA’s Darren Bergman, includes the introduction of a comprehensive licensing system for online gambling platforms. These platforms would be required to comply with rigorous standards to receive and maintain their licenses. Moreover, the proposal calls for the creation of a supervisory authority dedicated to ensuring these standards are met and maintained.

Impact on South Africa’s Gambling Industry

If approved, the bill could significantly change the landscape of gambling in South Africa. By bringing the country’s regulations in line with international norms, the bill aims to enhance consumer protection and tap into the economic benefits of a legalized online gambling industry.
