Wayne Newton Extends Flamingo Las Vegas Residency, Announces Latest Dates

Wayne Newton, famously known as Mr. Las Vegas, has added 62 more dates to his ongoing residency at the iconic Flamingo Las Vegas. The extension means his captivating “Wayne: Up Close and Personal” show at the Wayne Newton Theater will continue entertaining audiences until June 12, 2024. This milestone also coincides with the celebration of the 65th anniversary of his inaugural performance on a Las Vegas stage.
A Journey Back to the Beginning
Newton’s remarkable journey in Las Vegas began back on May 19, 1959, when he and his brother Jerry, performing as the Newton Brothers, took the stage at the Carnival Room in the Fremont Hotel. A booking agent, captivated by their TV show in Phoenix, played a pivotal role in this debut.
Recalling his early days, Newton reminisced, “I went to Vegas two weeks before my junior year was finished in Phoenix. And I thought the Flamingo, for example, would just be, like, a big flamingo standing there and the elevators are going up the legs. I had no touch of reality of what Las Vegas was about.”
A Legacy of Performances
From that moment at age 15, Wayne Newton went on to dazzle audiences with over 50,000 shows, entertaining more than 40 million people in Las Vegas. Notably, there won’t be a performance on his actual anniversary, but he will grace the stage on May 18 and 20, keeping the spirit of his journey alive.
Sharing a poignant memory, Newton recounted his emotional connection to Las Vegas during the grand opening of T-Mobile Arena in 2016. “I decided to do a tribute to all those people who made Las Vegas what it is, in terms of performers – Frank and Dean and Sam and Bobby Darin and on and on,” he revealed.
“When I got to the last song, I closed it with ‘My Way.’ And while I was singing, everybody in that audience turned on their light on their phone and the lighting guy turned out the lights in the room. And I realized I was crying when it was over.”
