How to Play Video Poker & Win

Video Poker Rules

Video Poker came to the fore in casinos back in the 1970s. It is now one of the most popular casino games both online and in land-based casinos, and can even be found in many bars and clubs the world over.

The video poker rules are simple if you know your poker hand rankings , and is a game of skill with a low house-edge compared to many casino games.

Many versions have a large jackpot and can, therefore, offer a potentially life-changing sum of money if your luck is in.

Rules: The Basics Of Video Poker

Most versions of Video Poker are played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Some versions also include a Joker which can be substituted for any of the 52 cards.

Machines normally have the coin system in play so you can choose the value of the coin you wish to play with and how many of those coins you use.

As with online slots, we suggest you play with maximum coins wherever possible as you will often find that payouts are better this way, so for example if you wish to play €1 per game, we suggest setting the coin at €0.20 and playing 5 coins to total €1 rather than playing 1 coin with a value of €1.

Once you have entered your stake, press the Deal button and you will randomly be dealt 5 cards.

You now get to discard as many cards as you wish, you can keep all 5 if you already have a good hand or discard all 5 if you don’t have anything. Make sure you choose the ones you wish to keep and click Deal again.

The cards you chose to discard will now be replaced with other cards from the same deck – you won’t be dealt the same cards you discarded.

Once you have a 5 card hand again, payouts are made according to the poker hand you have.

A reminder of the best poker hands can be found below, the better the hand the higher your payout.

Unlike the standard game of poker, you are not playing against other players, therefore, you don’t have a hand/s you need to beat, simply put, the better your poker hand the higher your payout.

The minimum hand needed for a payout varies from machine to machine, it is normally around 1 pair of Jacks or better though.

Below is a screenshot of a standard Video Poker game.

You will see that by playing 5 coins, payouts are 4 times more than if you play with 4 coins.

The minimum needed for a payout in the above machine is a pair of Jacks or better, this gets your stake returned, going right up to 4,000 coins from a 5 coin bet for a Royal Flush – which this lucky player got!

The hands you are trying to get are below, the best ones are at the top:

Royal Flush – 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of the same suit
Straight Flush – Any 5 consecutive cards of the same suit, that aren’t 10 upwards which would be a Royal flush – e.g. 5,6,7,8 and 9 of the same suit
4 of a Kind – Any 4 of the same value and any other cards, e.g four 5’s
Full House – Any 3 cards of the same value and 2 cards of the same value – e.g three 8’s and two 10’s
Flush – Any 5 cards of the same suit that don’t run in order – e.g 4, 6, 9, 10 and Queen of Spades
Straight – Any 5 cards that run consecutively of more than one suit – e.g 5, 6 of Spades, 7 of Diamonds, 8 of Hearts and 9 of Clubs
3 of a Kind – Any 3 cards of the same value – e.g three 9’s and any 2 other cards
2 Pair – 2 lots of 2 of the same value – e.g two 4’s and two 6’s and any other card
1 Pair – 1 pair of the same value and any other 3 cards – most machines will only payout if this pair is Jacks or higher – so a pair of Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces, and any 3 other cards
